What to expect the first few years…

Newborn

1-3 days after birth

Newborn

  • Check baby’s weight, feeding, and jaundice

  • Evaluate umbilical cord and circumcision (if applicable)

  • Address newborn sleep, pooping/peeing frequency, and latch

  • Review any concerns from hospital discharge

  • Begin building a relationship with the family

2 Week

1 Week

  • Confirm baby is back to or gaining weight toward birth weight

  • Feeding support (breast or bottle)

  • Review early bonding and postpartum emotional check-in for parent

  • Discuss safe sleep and newborn behavior

  • Continue developmental screening (reflexes, tone, alertness)

1 Month

1 Month

  • Monitor weight gain and feeding progress

  • Observe social responsiveness (e.g., eye contact, sounds)

  • Sleep patterns and adjusting routines

  • Discuss tummy time and infant safety

  • Reassure about normal fussy periods and crying patterns

 

2 Month

2 Month

Includes: First round of vaccines (DTaP, IPV, Hib, Hep B, PCV, Rotavirus)

  • Growth tracking (length, weight, head circumference)

  • Developmental milestones: cooing, eye tracking, alertness

  • Start discussion about routines (feeding/sleeping)

  • Address parental concerns: colic, reflux, postpartum anxiety

4 Month

4 Month

Vaccines: Second dose of 2-month series

  • Assess head control, rolling, hand-to-mouth movement

  • Introduction of daily playtime routines

  • Discuss teething signs and future solid food readiness

  • Continued support for feeding and sleep routines

6 Month

6 Month

Vaccines: Third dose of most early series + flu shot (if in season)

  • Baby may start sitting with support and babbling

  • Begin solids: discuss how and what to introduce

  • Revisit sleep training, safety at home

  • Stranger anxiety and social-emotional development

9 Month

9 Month

  • Milestones: sitting without support, pincer grasp, early crawling

  • Safety: baby-proofing, choking hazards, injury prevention

  • Sleep and feeding updates (3 meals + milk)

  • Developmental screening (e.g., ASQ questionnaire)

  • Talk about communication: gestures, babbling, imitation

1 Year

1 Year

Vaccines: MMR, PCV, Hepatitis A, flu shot (if in season)

  • Milestones: pulling to stand, cruising, early walking, waving

  • Switch to whole milk and cup drinking

  • Introduce dental care and first dentist visit

  • Discuss discipline, separation anxiety, and communication

  • Finger foods, independence, and social interaction
